Empowerment

IPER launched a Vocational Training Programme for Young Women in Distress in the year 2001 the Year of Empowerment of Women. This was done to give the girls a chance who are compelled to work as domestic maids a better life and earning.

The objectives of the programme are

  • To impart certain basic skills to young girls above 14 years and women so that they can develop a future of self-reliance and lead an economically independent life.
  • To improve the economic condition of the families by providing vocational skills to the mothers so that they are no longer forced to send their children to work
  • To enable the women be decision makers in the family, community and larger society

The training is being imparted in the following skills

  • The cutting, stitching and embroidery
  • Fabric painting
  • Paper based products
  • Jute based products
  • Soft toys
  • Handicrafts with different items as handmade paper, broken glasses, throw away fabrics, boards, etc.

A one-year course on Beautician has been introduced from 2009 as the girls demanded the course which was found to fetch employment easily. The display of the products of the unit is being promoted through exhibitions and display at the Centre . A few are working in Beauty Parlour and earning a much better salary than they can expect from household work.

Most important is that they have earned RESPECT and DIGNITY which their mothers and elders never got in their life.

The sale of the products of the unit is being promoted through exhibition-cum-sale during Poila Baishakh [Bengal New Year Day] and Durga Puja [the Autumn Festival of Bengal]. Other NGOs and women entrepreneurs are also invited to sell their products, thus giving everybody a platform to showcase their creativity and sell the same.

Apart from this IPER Swadhina products like file covers, bags, etc are appreciated by different organizations like UNICEF used the same for their workshops.
