IPER ~ An Organisation With A Cause

IPER, Institute of Psychological and Educational Research, is a voluntary organization working with the disadvantaged population of the state especially women and children since 1971. Set up as a non-profit voluntary organisation with a band of dedicated team of workers it is working in the slums of Kolkata city for extending to the dwellers the basic necessities of life.

The vision of IPER is to bring in an all round development of the underprivileged children and women with a special focus on the girl child. Hence specific objectives of IPER to reach this vision are to initiate, organise and promote all activities of human development, to evolve, innovate and execute planned and research-based programmes conducive to progress for the underprivileged section of the population, who have been neglected and are victims of social injustice, to address the rights of women and children who have been denied of them and to conduct research on major problems of development and to undertake advocacy, training and net-working with similar minded organisations.

The major area of focus of its activities is on the uplift and development of those who though live in the society and form a large section of it yet remain outside the mainstream society because of the discriminatory attitude of the people around.

As a result IPER conducts all its programmes with a rights’ approach keeping the principle of the best interest of the child in mind and this spirit permeates all the activities that are carried out by it.

Through its different projects IPER works with children who live in very impoverished and hazardous conditions. They are in a high-risk condition as they are on the verge of being trafficked, abused and exploited and are subjected to violence both within and outside the family.

They live on the streets of Kolkata, begging or picking up throwaways of the elites of the city; child workers who are toiling for 14 hours a day under the scorching heat at the roadside Dhabas heating water to serve tea to the Babus of Kolkata or welding the doors and engines of the Scorpios, Sumos and Mercedes of the CEOs of the Corporate houses of the city; children who do not go to school as it does not offer them anything interesting rather rob away the freedom of their childhood, the schools which instead of being a pulling factor works as a push away force for these children.

IPER also works with girls and women who toil in the morning and evening with often one meal a day to wash the dishes and bowls in our houses so that we can have a clean plate to eat from more often than not three times a day.

IPER during its long period of work with the slum children is witness to certain glaring problems in their lives, intense violence is perpetrated on them with total neglect and denial of their rights in the family. IPER thus also works with the families of these children which again worked as an eye opener as it was found that in most of the cases under the guise of a patriarchal family there is a single woman toiling for more than ten hours a day for the entire family to make both ends meet.

An undisputed fact that is known to all development-worker is that people’s empowerment is fully dependent on the women who have for centuries been marginalized and have been at the mercy of men despite their capacity for hard work and immense contribution to the development of family, community and nation. Moreover it is the women in the family who influence the child as no body else can. This age-old discrimination meted out to one section of the population by another section has inspired IPER to initiate programmes which will prevent this discrimination and enable the women to stand up for their rights as a human being.

It is through these activities IPER reaches out to a large section of the population especially the women in the area it works. The target group of women and young girls not only derives their basic requirements from the organization but along with it they gradually emerge as individuals conscious and demanding their rights. IPER through its long work of three decades need not go on advocating its presence in the community but it is those children, women and young persons who have gone through the programme of IPER that carry the message forward.

Appeal for Support

IPER is working for the underprivileged population for nearly four decades. The programme is taken-up based on the felt and real needs of the children and women living in a very depressing conditions. With the development in different sectors the gap between the ‘have’s’ and ‘have-not’s’ are growing bigger and bigger.

We would appeal to like minded individuals and organizations to come forward to held us to help others and make the life of many a self-sustaining one.
